Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology R&D Center for Metal Forming & new Mould Technology was approved by the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong province in 2013 to establish a professional research and development institution engaged in metal processing and advanced mold technology. The Engineering Center is based on the School of Materials and Energy (SME), Guangdong University of Technology (GDUT), which has the postdoctoral workstation of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) and the granting authority for MSE doctoral and a master degree is depended. The Engineering Center is supported by the key discipline of "Project 211" with three stages in Guangdong province, the key discipline of “Panfeng” in Guangdong province and key construction discipline of high-level university in Guangdong province. Being correlated closely with the demand of manufacturing industry in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), the Engineering Center is mainly focus on the scientific research and technological development in many aspects, including the research and preparation of high-performance metal materials (Aluminum and Magnesium alloys with high strength and toughness, High Entropy alloys, Metal glass, Metal fiber composites, etc.), the new technology and theory of material forming (Servo forming, Electromagnetic forming, Heated mold continuous casting, Internal high pressure forming, Computer simulation for the forming process, etc.), the forming equipment and intelligent control (Working mechanism of servo press, Functional components with high performance for servo press, Automatic stamping production line, etc.), the advanced mould technology (Mould CAD/CAE/CAM, Mould additive manufacturing), etc.

At present, the Engineering Center has 16 researchers, among whom professors are 3 and associate professors are 7, and 12 researchers possess doctorate. The Engineering Center is composed of two labs, including the Material Forming & Control lab and Advanced Mould Technology lab, covering an area of almost 1300 m2. The Engineering Center has 100 sets of advanced processing equipment and a complete set of experimental and testing equipment with a total value of more than 20 million RMB, including Fatigue testing machine with scanning electron microscope, Electro-hydraulic servo fatigue testing machine, General testing machine for hot forming of sheet metal, Precision electronic tensile testing machine, Universal process testing machine, Servo press, Hydraulic machine, Screw press, Electromagnetic forming machine, Internal high pressure forming machine, Heated mould continuous casting machine, Metal spray forming machine, Melting furnace, Heat treatment furnace, Rapid prototyping machine, Precision injection machine, Double-screw extruder, Three coordinate measuring machine, Precision Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining center, CNC electric discharge, Wire-electrode cutting machine, CNC milling machine, etc. Moreover, there are more than 20 set of computer workstations with various types and many set of various CAD/CAE/CAM software.

Since the establishment, the Engineering Center has hosted and participated in more than 10 national funding projects, more than 20 provincial/ministerial scientific research and other level projects, with a total amount of nearly 12 million RMB among these projects. The Engineering Center has published more than 100 papers, of which more than 30 papers are indexed by SCI/EI, and achieved more than 30 invention patents, and published 2 monographs. The Engineering Center has established close cooperative relationship with many enterprises in the Pearl River Delta region of Guangdong province, which will play a positive role in promoting the development of material forming and mold technology in the manufacturing industry of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
